What This Drill Improves
This volleyball drill is best for intermediate players who need focused work on setting. It works well with 6 players and can be adjusted by changing the space, pressure, or scoring rules.
Setup
Setter at position 2. Passers queue at position 6. Cones mark the four set targets.
Instructions
Passer passes to setter from zone 6.
Setter calls the set before delivering: outside, middle, right side, back set.
Hitter or catcher confirms accuracy: in-target or out.
15 sets per rotation, 4 rotations.
Coaching Points
✓ Consistent platform — set from the forehead, not the chest.
✓ Hands shape the set — triangle above the head.
✓ Follow through toward the target.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
Players losing focus on the main coaching point.
The drill area being too large or too small for the group.
Progressing the drill before the basic pattern is clean.
Progressions: Make It Harder
→ Setter is given the call at the last moment.
→ Add a live hitter and attack.
→ Blind setting — caller doesn't reveal until ball is in the air.
Regressions: Make It Easier
Start without defenders, then add pressure once the movement pattern is clear.
Allow extra touches until players understand the timing.
