What This Drill Improves

This volleyball drill is best for advanced players who need focused work on defence. It works well with 6 players and can be adjusted by changing the space, pressure, or scoring rules.

Setup

Libero in back row. Coach/feeder attacks from a box at the net. 2 feeders with balls.

Instructions

  1. Round 1: Angle shots — libero reads and digs cross-court attacks.
  2. Round 2: Tip drill — libero reads blocker and chases tips.
  3. Round 3: Seam balls — serves and attacks to zone 6/1 seam.
  4. 5 minutes per round. Minimal rest.

Coaching Points

✓ Read the attacker's shoulder — not the ball.
✓ Low to the ground before contact — not during.
✓ Platform parallel to target, not ball.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Players losing focus on the main coaching point.
  • The drill area being too large or too small for the group.
  • Progressing the drill before the basic pattern is clean.

Progressions: Make It Harder

→ Attacks come with no warning — random feeds.
→ Libero calls every ball before digging.
→ Include a setter — libero digs, setter attacks.

Regressions: Make It Easier

Reduce the number of defenders or make pressure passive for the first few rounds.
Increase the playing space so players have more time to make decisions.
