What This Drill Improves

This soccer drill is best for intermediate players who need focused work on finishing. It works well with 8 players and can be adjusted by changing the space, pressure, or scoring rules.

Setup

Two wide channels with servers. Forwards and CMs start in central positions.

Instructions

  1. Server plays wide to winger.
  2. Winger drives to the byline and delivers a cross.
  3. 2–3 attackers make runs to attack near post, far post, and penalty spot.
  4. Rotate positions every 5 crosses.

Coaching Points

✓ Near-post runners go early and sharp.
✓ Far-post runner times run to arrive as ball is crossed.
✓ Encourage first-time finishes.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Players rushing the finish before setting their body shape.
  • Shots aimed without looking at the goalkeeper or target area.
  • Runs arriving too early, making the finish predictable.

Progressions: Make It Harder

→ Add a defender to make it a live 2v1 in the box.
→ Winger must beat a cone before crossing.
→ Time the whole sequence — goal within 5 seconds of cross.

Regressions: Make It Easier

Start without defenders, then add pressure once the movement pattern is clear.
Allow extra touches until players understand the timing.
