What This Drill Improves

This soccer drill is best for beginner players who need focused work on finishing. It works well with 8 players and can be adjusted by changing the space, pressure, or scoring rules.

Setup

Wide server starts outside the box. Two attackers start central, one attacks near post and one far post.

Instructions

  1. Wide player takes touch and crosses.
  2. Near-post runner moves early to distract defenders.
  3. Far-post runner delays and attacks the back post.
  4. Rotate after each cross.

Coaching Points

✓ Far-post runner must stay wide enough to see the ball.
✓ Arrive as the ball arrives.
✓ Finish back across goal if angle is tight.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Players rushing the finish before setting their body shape.
  • Shots aimed without looking at the goalkeeper or target area.
  • Runs arriving too early, making the finish predictable.

Progressions: Make It Harder

→ Add one defender in the box.
→ Cross from both sides.
→ Far-post runner must finish first time.

Regressions: Make It Easier

Walk through the pattern first, then build up to game speed.
Use larger targets or more space to help players succeed early.
