What This Drill Improves

This soccer drill is best for all levels players who need focused work on finishing. It works well with 8 players and can be adjusted by changing the space, pressure, or scoring rules.

Setup

GK in goal. 6 outfield players in pairs take penalties in rotation.

Instructions

  1. Each player takes 5 penalties.
  2. Score: 1 point per goal, bonus point if GK dives wrong way.
  3. After 5 each, pair with lowest score does 10 press-ups.
  4. Final round: sudden death tournament.

Coaching Points

✓ Pick your spot before the run-up — stick with it.
✓ Consistent approach and plant foot.
✓ Don't look at the keeper once you've decided.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Players rushing the finish before setting their body shape.
  • Shots aimed without looking at the goalkeeper or target area.
  • Runs arriving too early, making the finish predictable.

Progressions: Make It Harder

→ Simulate match pressure — describe a cup final scenario.
→ GK allowed to move early.
→ Long run-up (from edge of box).

Regressions: Make It Easier

Walk through the pattern first, then build up to game speed.
Use larger targets or more space to help players succeed early.
