What This Drill Improves

This volleyball drill is best for intermediate players who need focused work on passing. It works well with 6 players and can be adjusted by changing the space, pressure, or scoring rules.

Setup

Server with strong float serve. 3 passers in serve receive formation.

Instructions

  1. Server focuses on float movement — no topspin.
  2. Passers read the serve early and move feet before platform contact.
  3. Target: 8 of 10 passes land in setting zone.
  4. Rotate server after 10 serves.

Coaching Points

✓ Watch the ball leave the hand — not the server.
✓ Move the feet first — don't reach.
✓ Soft hands — absorb the float movement.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Players standing still after passing instead of creating a new angle.
  • Passes played too slowly, allowing defenders to recover.
  • Receivers taking their first touch into pressure.

Progressions: Make It Harder

→ Server aims at the seam between two passers.
→ Passers cannot see the server until the serve (blocked view).
→ Receive and immediately play the next ball — continuous rally.

Regressions: Make It Easier

Start without defenders, then add pressure once the movement pattern is clear.
Allow extra touches until players understand the timing.
