What This Drill Improves

This volleyball drill is best for beginner players who need focused work on passing. It works well with 6 players and can be adjusted by changing the space, pressure, or scoring rules.

Setup

3 passers in W-formation. Server on opposite side. Setter at net (position 2/3).

Instructions

  1. Server varies — float, topspin, jump serve.
  2. Passers call the ball early (mine).
  3. Pass to setter target — aim for hands, not body.
  4. Setter catches or sets back. Rotate passers every 10 serves.

Coaching Points

✓ Platform angle — face where you want the ball to go.
✓ Move feet first, then platform.
✓ Don't arm-swing — absorb the power.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Players standing still after passing instead of creating a new angle.
  • Passes played too slowly, allowing defenders to recover.
  • Receivers taking their first touch into pressure.

Progressions: Make It Harder

→ Setter sets to a hitter who attacks.
→ Serve from different zones to vary angle.
→ Target: 8 out of 10 passes on target.

Regressions: Make It Easier

Walk through the pattern first, then build up to game speed.
Use larger targets or more space to help players succeed early.
