What This Drill Improves

This soccer drill is best for intermediate players who need focused work on goalkeeping. It works well with 5 players and can be adjusted by changing the space, pressure, or scoring rules.

Setup

GK in goal. 3 servers at different angles. Coach controls sequence.

Instructions

  1. Server 1 shoots to near post. GK saves, immediately resets.
  2. Server 2 shoots to far post.
  3. Server 3 shoots down the middle.
  4. Sequence: 10 shots per round, 3 rounds.

Coaching Points

✓ Set position between every shot — don't stay down.
✓ Dive toward the ball — not away from it.
✓ Parry to the side, not back into danger.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Players losing focus on the main coaching point.
  • The drill area being too large or too small for the group.
  • Progressing the drill before the basic pattern is clean.

Progressions: Make It Harder

→ Include rebounds — second shooter attacks rebound.
→ GK must shout which server they expect.
→ Reduce gaps between shots.

Regressions: Make It Easier

Start without defenders, then add pressure once the movement pattern is clear.
Allow extra touches until players understand the timing.
