What This Drill Improves

This soccer drill is best for intermediate players who need focused work on goalkeeping. It works well with 6 players and can be adjusted by changing the space, pressure, or scoring rules.

Setup

Two servers, one left and one right. GK in goal. 2 target players wide and 1 CM.

Instructions

  1. Server shoots — GK saves.
  2. GK immediately looks up and distributes to best target.
  3. Target must be moving before distribution.
  4. Cycle through 3 targets in rotation. 12 reps per round.

Coaching Points

✓ Don't hold the ball — release within 6 seconds.
✓ Look up while saving if possible — know your options.
✓ Match distribution to the position: low = roll, high = kick.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Players losing focus on the main coaching point.
  • The drill area being too large or too small for the group.
  • Progressing the drill before the basic pattern is clean.

Progressions: Make It Harder

→ Third player closes GK immediately after shot.
→ GK must play to a player under pressure.
→ Link to full attack — distribution triggers a counter.

Regressions: Make It Easier

Start without defenders, then add pressure once the movement pattern is clear.
Allow extra touches until players understand the timing.
