What This Drill Improves

This soccer drill is best for intermediate players who need focused work on goalkeeping. It works well with 8 players and can be adjusted by changing the space, pressure, or scoring rules.

Setup

GK + 3 defenders vs 3 pressing forwards. 2 target players in wide positions.

Instructions

  1. GK starts with ball (from save or roll-out).
  2. Pressing forwards apply immediate pressure.
  3. GK must play short to defenders or switch to wide targets.
  4. If press wins ball, they attack the goal.

Coaching Points

✓ GK communicates before distributing — hold or go.
✓ Short option — play to feet, away from pressure.
✓ Long option — hit the back shoulder of the wide player.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Players losing focus on the main coaching point.
  • The drill area being too large or too small for the group.
  • Progressing the drill before the basic pattern is clean.

Progressions: Make It Harder

→ Add a 4th presser.
→ GK must complete 5 successful distributions in a row.
→ Restricted touches for outfield players.

Regressions: Make It Easier

Start without defenders, then add pressure once the movement pattern is clear.
Allow extra touches until players understand the timing.
