What This Drill Improves

This basketball drill is best for beginner players who need focused work on passing. It works well with 9 players and can be adjusted by changing the space, pressure, or scoring rules.

Setup

3 lines at baseline. Each group of 3 works from one end to the other.

Instructions

  1. Middle player passes right, runs behind.
  2. Right player passes left, runs behind.
  3. Continue weaving up the court.
  4. Last pass before the basket — player goes in for the layup.
  5. Return weaving back to baseline.

Coaching Points

✓ Pass ahead of the runner — lead them.
✓ Never pass and stand — always follow.
✓ Catch, pivot, pass — no holding the ball.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Players standing still after passing instead of creating a new angle.
  • Passes played too slowly, allowing defenders to recover.
  • Receivers taking their first touch into pressure.

Progressions: Make It Harder

→ Add a defender at the far end.
→ Must finish with a specific type of layup (reverse, finger roll).
→ Time the group — beat 20 seconds end to end.

Regressions: Make It Easier

Walk through the pattern first, then build up to game speed.
Use larger targets or more space to help players succeed early.
