What This Drill Improves
This soccer drill is best for intermediate players who need focused work on passing. It works well with 8 players and can be adjusted by changing the space, pressure, or scoring rules.
Setup
Set four cones in a diamond shape with players at each point and spare players behind start cones.
Instructions
Ball starts at the base of the diamond.
Play through one side, into the top player, then switch to the opposite side.
Players follow their pass.
Reverse direction every 4 minutes.
Coaching Points
✓ Receive side-on to see both sides.
✓ Switch pass must travel quickly across the diamond.
✓ Support player checks away before receiving.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
Players standing still after passing instead of creating a new angle.
Passes played too slowly, allowing defenders to recover.
Receivers taking their first touch into pressure.
Progressions: Make It Harder
→ Add one-touch layoff at the top.
→ Add a passive defender in the middle.
→ Make the switch pass aerial for advanced players.
Regressions: Make It Easier
Start without defenders, then add pressure once the movement pattern is clear.
Allow extra touches until players understand the timing.
