What This Drill Improves

This soccer drill is best for intermediate players who need focused work on passing. It works well with 10 players and can be adjusted by changing the space, pressure, or scoring rules.

Setup

40×30 m grid. Two wide zones (5 m each side). Central zone 30×30 m.

Instructions

  1. 4 central players work the ball. 2 wide players one each side.
  2. Ball must travel from left winger to right winger within 6 passes.
  3. Defenders (3) can only enter wide zones once the ball arrives.
  4. Score = switch completed cleanly.

Coaching Points

✓ Central players create passing angles quickly.
✓ Wide player opens body early.
✓ No square passes in central zone if defender is close.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Players standing still after passing instead of creating a new angle.
  • Passes played too slowly, allowing defenders to recover.
  • Receivers taking their first touch into pressure.

Progressions: Make It Harder

→ Limit central players to 2 touches.
→ Add a fourth defender.
→ Winner is team that completes most switches in 5 min.

Regressions: Make It Easier

Start without defenders, then add pressure once the movement pattern is clear.
Allow extra touches until players understand the timing.
