What This Drill Improves

This soccer drill is best for intermediate players who need focused work on attacking. It works well with 9 players and can be adjusted by changing the space, pressure, or scoring rules.

Setup

Set three passing stations in a channel with a mini goal at the end. Players rotate through A, B, and C.

Instructions

  1. A passes into B and follows.
  2. B sets the ball back or around the corner.
  3. C makes the third-man run to receive beyond B.
  4. C finishes in the mini goal and rotates.

Coaching Points

✓ Third player starts hidden then arrives quickly.
✓ Set pass must be cushioned into the runner path.
✓ Timing matters more than speed.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Players losing focus on the main coaching point.
  • The drill area being too large or too small for the group.
  • Progressing the drill before the basic pattern is clean.

Progressions: Make It Harder

→ Add a passive defender near B.
→ Make the finish one-touch.
→ Run the pattern on both sides.

Regressions: Make It Easier

Start without defenders, then add pressure once the movement pattern is clear.
Allow extra touches until players understand the timing.
