What This Drill Improves
This soccer drill is best for intermediate players who need focused work on attacking. It works well with 10 players and can be adjusted by changing the space, pressure, or scoring rules.
Setup
Coach plays ball in to trigger the counter. 3 attackers vs 2 defenders toward goal.
Instructions
Coach plays ball to one of the 3 attackers at halfway.
3 attackers attack immediately at pace.
2 defenders recover and try to stop the attack.
Decision-making under pressure is the key focus.
Coaching Points
✓ Ball carrier decides — go alone or play in?
✓ Runners attack space, not each other.
✓ No dithering — commit to the decision.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
Players losing focus on the main coaching point.
The drill area being too large or too small for the group.
Progressing the drill before the basic pattern is clean.
Progressions: Make It Harder
→ Add a recovering third defender.
→ Attackers must score within 8 seconds.
→ Counter must start with a specific pass combination.
Regressions: Make It Easier
Start without defenders, then add pressure once the movement pattern is clear.
Allow extra touches until players understand the timing.
