What This Drill Improves

This volleyball drill is best for advanced players who need focused work on attacking. It works well with 8 players and can be adjusted by changing the space, pressure, or scoring rules.

Setup

Setter at position 2. Back row player approaches from Zone 6 (Pipe) and Zone 1.

Instructions

  1. Passer passes from zone 5.
  2. Setter delivers a back set to the pipe attacker.
  3. Attacker approaches and jumps from behind the 3m line.
  4. 5 reps pipe, 5 reps D position. Rotate hitters.

Coaching Points

✓ Jump must be fully behind the 3m line — no stepping over.
✓ Approach: same as front row — full arm swing.
✓ Pipe: straight ahead; D: cut angle shot.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Players losing focus on the main coaching point.
  • The drill area being too large or too small for the group.
  • Progressing the drill before the basic pattern is clean.

Progressions: Make It Harder

→ Add a block.
→ Back row combined with outside hitter — setter reads defence.
→ Live point after attack.

Regressions: Make It Easier

Reduce the number of defenders or make pressure passive for the first few rounds.
Increase the playing space so players have more time to make decisions.
