What This Drill Improves
This rugby drill is best for intermediate players who need focused work on set piece. It works well with 6 players and can be adjusted by changing the space, pressure, or scoring rules.
Setup
3 lifters at short, middle, and tail of lineout. Hooker throws from sideline.
Instructions
Call a lineout move — short, middle, or tail.
Hooker throws to called jumper.
Lifters support the jump.
Count accurate deliveries out of 10 per zone. Switch thrower every 15 throws.
Coaching Points
✓ Ball held at back, propelled with full arm extension.
✓ Aim for the jumper's hands — not their body.
✓ Consistent wind-up and release point.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
Players losing focus on the main coaching point.
The drill area being too large or too small for the group.
Progressing the drill before the basic pattern is clean.
Progressions: Make It Harder
→ Add opposition lineout (passive).
→ Call is given at last moment — hooker must adjust.
→ Include a decoy call.
Regressions: Make It Easier
Start without defenders, then add pressure once the movement pattern is clear.
Allow extra touches until players understand the timing.
