What This Drill Improves

This basketball drill is best for advanced players who need focused work on offense. It works well with 10 players and can be adjusted by changing the space, pressure, or scoring rules.

Setup

5 offensive players vs 5-player 2-3 zone. Walk-through first, then live.

Instructions

  1. Ball movement — keep moving until the zone gaps.
  2. Skip pass to opposite corner when zone slides.
  3. High-low: pass to high post, then dump to low post.
  4. Corner 3 when wing defender chases.

Coaching Points

✓ Move the zone — don't stand still.
✓ Attack the gaps, not the defenders.
✓ Patience: the gap will come.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Players losing focus on the main coaching point.
  • The drill area being too large or too small for the group.
  • Progressing the drill before the basic pattern is clean.

Progressions: Make It Harder

→ Time limit: score within 20 seconds.
→ Zone defenders can only take 2 steps sideways.
→ Live 5v5 — defense chooses zone or man.

Regressions: Make It Easier

Reduce the number of defenders or make pressure passive for the first few rounds.
Increase the playing space so players have more time to make decisions.
