What This Drill Improves

This basketball drill is best for intermediate players who need focused work on transition. It works well with 9 players and can be adjusted by changing the space, pressure, or scoring rules.

Setup

2 attackers + 1 defender at one end. On score or stop, becomes 3v2 going the other way.

Instructions

  1. Coach starts 2v1 going to far basket.
  2. If attackers score, the 2 become defenders. A third player sprints to join attackers.
  3. Rotate new players in from the side each rep.

Coaching Points

✓ 2v1 — pass early, attack the gap.
✓ 3v2 — middle player controls pace, wings stretch the defence.
✓ Defence: stop the ball first, protect the basket second.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Players losing focus on the main coaching point.
  • The drill area being too large or too small for the group.
  • Progressing the drill before the basic pattern is clean.

Progressions: Make It Harder

→ 4v3 variant.
→ Time limit per possession.
→ Loser of each rep runs a half-court sprint.

Regressions: Make It Easier

Start without defenders, then add pressure once the movement pattern is clear.
Allow extra touches until players understand the timing.
