What This Drill Improves

This soccer drill is best for intermediate players who need focused work on physical. It works well with 8 players and can be adjusted by changing the space, pressure, or scoring rules.

Setup

Server with balls at wide position. Pairs of players compete for crossed balls.

Instructions

  1. Server delivers lofted cross into area.
  2. Two players compete to head the ball to a target.
  3. The player who wins the header scores a point.
  4. Rotate pairs every 5 deliveries.

Coaching Points

✓ Take off on one foot — jumping off two feet loses height.
✓ Attack the ball — don't wait for it.
✓ Arch the back, then snap forward through the ball.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Players losing focus on the main coaching point.
  • The drill area being too large or too small for the group.
  • Progressing the drill before the basic pattern is clean.

Progressions: Make It Harder

→ Add a goalkeeper.
→ Header must reach a target zone to score.
→ Three-way aerial — three players competing.

Regressions: Make It Easier

Start without defenders, then add pressure once the movement pattern is clear.
Allow extra touches until players understand the timing.
