What This Drill Improves

This soccer drill is best for advanced players who need focused work on possession. It works well with 10 players and can be adjusted by changing the space, pressure, or scoring rules.

Setup

7 attackers vs 3 defenders in 20×20 m grid.

Instructions

  1. 7 attackers circulate the ball with max 2 touches.
  2. Defenders work in a coordinated press — press, cover, balance.
  3. If defenders win ball or force 3+ touches from same player, rotate.
  4. Rondo restarts when attacker deliberately plays out of bounds.

Coaching Points

✓ Open body to see both options before receiving.
✓ Switch play quickly — find the free player.
✓ Defenders: press the passing lane, not just the ball.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Players standing still after passing instead of creating a new angle.
  • Passes played too slowly, allowing defenders to recover.
  • Receivers taking their first touch into pressure.

Progressions: Make It Harder

→ One-touch only for 5 consecutive passes.
→ Ball in the air scores — chip and volley challenge.
→ Reduce to 15×15 m.

Regressions: Make It Easier

Reduce the number of defenders or make pressure passive for the first few rounds.
Increase the playing space so players have more time to make decisions.
