What This Drill Improves

This soccer drill is best for advanced players who need focused work on possession. It works well with 10 players and can be adjusted by changing the space, pressure, or scoring rules.

Setup

35×25 m grid. 6 attackers vs 4 defenders. Two target goals or end zones.

Instructions

  1. 6 attackers maintain possession and look to progress into end zone.
  2. 4 defenders press in a coordinated block.
  3. Attackers score by passing into end zone and receiving.
  4. Reset after each score or turnover.

Coaching Points

✓ Use width and depth — stretch the defenders.
✓ Switch play quickly before defenders can shift.
✓ Trigger — when is the right moment to go forward?

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Players standing still after passing instead of creating a new angle.
  • Passes played too slowly, allowing defenders to recover.
  • Receivers taking their first touch into pressure.

Progressions: Make It Harder

→ Defenders get a point for each 10-second spell of possession.
→ Add end-zone defenders (4+2).
→ Limit attackers to 2 touches.

Regressions: Make It Easier

Reduce the number of defenders or make pressure passive for the first few rounds.
Increase the playing space so players have more time to make decisions.
