What This Drill Improves

This rugby drill is best for beginner players who need focused work on passing. It works well with 8 players and can be adjusted by changing the space, pressure, or scoring rules.

Setup

Pairs in 10 m, 15 m, and 20 m channels. 3 pairs per channel.

Instructions

  1. Phase 1: 10 passes at 10 m. Count accurate catches.
  2. Phase 2: 10 passes at 15 m.
  3. Phase 3: 10 passes at 20 m.
  4. Score: accurate catch = 1 point. Miss = 0.

Coaching Points

✓ Follow through finger points to target.
✓ Ball exits from the little finger side.
✓ Step into the pass — don't throw across the body.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Players standing still after passing instead of creating a new angle.
  • Passes played too slowly, allowing defenders to recover.
  • Receivers taking their first touch into pressure.

Progressions: Make It Harder

→ Opposite hand pass only.
→ Running pass — both players moving at pace.
→ Add a defender who applies light pressure.

Regressions: Make It Easier

Walk through the pattern first, then build up to game speed.
Use larger targets or more space to help players succeed early.
