What This Drill Improves

This rugby drill is best for intermediate players who need focused work on kicking. It works well with 10 players and can be adjusted by changing the space, pressure, or scoring rules.

Setup

Scrum half box kicks from ruck zone. 3 chasers set in a line.

Instructions

  1. SH receives from a ruck and box kicks high.
  2. Chase line sprints on the kick — designated first chaser leads.
  3. Catchers on opposite side contest the catch.
  4. Chase team competes to win or disrupt possession. 5 reps then swap.

Coaching Points

✓ Chase on the kick contact — not after ball lands.
✓ First chaser targets the catcher's hands.
✓ Chase line fans out — don't all chase one point.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Players losing focus on the main coaching point.
  • The drill area being too large or too small for the group.
  • Progressing the drill before the basic pattern is clean.

Progressions: Make It Harder

→ Live 5v5 after the kick.
→ Catcher must hold for 3 seconds or it's turnover.
→ Add a grubber kick option.

Regressions: Make It Easier

Start without defenders, then add pressure once the movement pattern is clear.
Allow extra touches until players understand the timing.
