What This Drill Improves
This soccer drill is best for intermediate players who need focused work on possession. It works well with 7 players and can be adjusted by changing the space, pressure, or scoring rules.
Setup
Mark a 12x12 m square. Five attackers play around the outside and two defenders work inside.
Instructions
Attackers keep possession with unlimited touches to start.
A pass between the two defenders scores 2 points.
If defenders win the ball, the player who lost it swaps in.
Play 3-minute rounds.
Coaching Points
✓ Move the ball quickly to move defenders apart.
✓ Disguise split passes with body shape.
✓ Support angles must change after every pass.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
Players standing still after passing instead of creating a new angle.
Passes played too slowly, allowing defenders to recover.
Receivers taking their first touch into pressure.
Progressions: Make It Harder
→ Limit attackers to two touches.
→ Split pass must be one-touch.
→ Shrink the area to increase pressure.
Regressions: Make It Easier
Start without defenders, then add pressure once the movement pattern is clear.
Allow extra touches until players understand the timing.
