What This Drill Improves

This rugby drill is best for advanced players who need focused work on set piece. It works well with 8 players and can be adjusted by changing the space, pressure, or scoring rules.

Setup

Pods of 3 (prop-hooker-prop) against scrum machine. Progress to full 8.

Instructions

  1. Bind early and tightly — shirt grab behind armpit.
  2. Crouch-bind-set sequence in match timing.
  3. Drive through the machine for 5 seconds.
  4. Reset and repeat. 6 sets per pod.

Coaching Points

✓ Flat back — no arching or dipping.
✓ Hips drive up and through, not forward.
✓ Bind tight — loose bind = weak scrum.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Players losing focus on the main coaching point.
  • The drill area being too large or too small for the group.
  • Progressing the drill before the basic pattern is clean.

Progressions: Make It Harder

→ Full 8-man scrum.
→ Add a ball and channel it for the scrum half.
→ Compete — attacking vs defending scrum.

Regressions: Make It Easier

Reduce the number of defenders or make pressure passive for the first few rounds.
Increase the playing space so players have more time to make decisions.
