What This Drill Improves

This tennis drill is best for intermediate players who need focused work on mental toughness. It works well with 2 players and can be adjusted by changing the space, pressure, or scoring rules.

Setup

Standard singles court. Players play tiebreaks to 7 (win by 2). Best of 5 tiebreaks.

Instructions

  1. Alternate serve every 2 points.
  2. After each tiebreak, both players note their errors — forced vs unforced.
  3. Play next tiebreak — use the reflection to adjust.

Coaching Points

✓ High-percentage play on big points (6-6+).
✓ First serve percentage matters more in tiebreaks.
✓ Know your pattern — what do you do on pressure points?

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Players losing focus on the main coaching point.
  • The drill area being too large or too small for the group.
  • Progressing the drill before the basic pattern is clean.

Progressions: Make It Harder

→ Start tiebreak at 5-5.
→ Loser does 10 push-ups per tiebreak lost.
→ Video review of errors between tiebreaks.

Regressions: Make It Easier

Start without defenders, then add pressure once the movement pattern is clear.
Allow extra touches until players understand the timing.
