What This Drill Improves

This basketball drill is best for advanced players who need focused work on defending. It works well with 10 players and can be adjusted by changing the space, pressure, or scoring rules.

Setup

5v5 live. Coach stops play to correct defensive decisions only — offense runs freely.

Instructions

  1. Defence calls assignments on each change of possession.
  2. Coach stops play when a rotation is missed.
  3. Correct the mistake, walk through the right action, restart.
  4. Play 4-minute segments with a 1-minute breakdown.

Coaching Points

✓ Talk: ball, help, switch, I've got back.
✓ Sag on weak-side — don't chase.
✓ After a switch — confirm your new assignment immediately.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Defenders diving in instead of delaying and controlling space.
  • Teammates pressing individually rather than moving as a unit.
  • Poor communication before the ball arrives.

Progressions: Make It Harder

→ No coaching stoppages — film and review after.
→ Offence calls plays to stress specific rotation.
→ Restrict: no switching — zone coverages only.

Regressions: Make It Easier

Reduce the number of defenders or make pressure passive for the first few rounds.
Increase the playing space so players have more time to make decisions.
