What This Drill Improves

This basketball drill is best for intermediate players who need focused work on defending. It works well with 8 players and can be adjusted by changing the space, pressure, or scoring rules.

Setup

Defender starts under the basket. Offensive player stands at 3-point line with ball.

Instructions

  1. Coach passes to offensive player.
  2. Defender sprints out to close out — chop steps at the last second.
  3. Offensive player may shoot or drive.
  4. Defender must contest shot or stay in front on drive.

Coaching Points

✓ Chop steps to avoid running past the shooter.
✓ Hand up in the shooting lane — not at the ball.
✓ Stay low on the drive — don't lunge.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Defenders diving in instead of delaying and controlling space.
  • Teammates pressing individually rather than moving as a unit.
  • Poor communication before the ball arrives.

Progressions: Make It Harder

→ Offensive player uses one dribble before deciding.
→ Add a second offensive player as a kick-out option.
→ Defender must talk — call ball on closeout.

Regressions: Make It Easier

Start without defenders, then add pressure once the movement pattern is clear.
Allow extra touches until players understand the timing.
