What This Drill Improves

This soccer drill is best for beginner players who need focused work on passing. It works well with 9 players and can be adjusted by changing the space, pressure, or scoring rules.

Setup

Two cones 15 m apart with a passive defender in between. Three lines of players.

Instructions

  1. Player A passes to B (wall) and runs past the defender.
  2. B lays the ball first-time into A's path.
  3. A dribbles to the end cone.
  4. Rotate — B becomes defender, defender joins back of queue.

Coaching Points

✓ Pass must be firm and to the front foot.
✓ Wall player must lay off first-time.
✓ Runner must accelerate past the defender.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Players standing still after passing instead of creating a new angle.
  • Passes played too slowly, allowing defenders to recover.
  • Receivers taking their first touch into pressure.

Progressions: Make It Harder

→ Make the defender active.
→ Add a second wall pass before the end cone.
→ Combine with a finish into a goal.

Regressions: Make It Easier

Walk through the pattern first, then build up to game speed.
Use larger targets or more space to help players succeed early.
