What This Drill Improves

This soccer drill is best for intermediate players who need focused work on set pieces. It works well with 11 players and can be adjusted by changing the space, pressure, or scoring rules.

Setup

Full defensive unit (GK + 10) vs attacking team. Practice corners from both sides.

Instructions

  1. Near-post runner makes early run to clear space.
  2. Two blockers set screens at penalty spot.
  3. Main runners attack near post and far post on signal.
  4. Corner taker varies — inswinger vs outswinger.

Coaching Points

✓ Timing of runs — just before ball is struck.
✓ Blockers must stay legal (shoulder-to-shoulder).
✓ GK calls early — keeper's or away.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Players losing focus on the main coaching point.
  • The drill area being too large or too small for the group.
  • Progressing the drill before the basic pattern is clean.

Progressions: Make It Harder

→ Add a short corner option.
→ Defending team plays live.
→ Attackers must score within 2 attempts at each side.

Regressions: Make It Easier

Start without defenders, then add pressure once the movement pattern is clear.
Allow extra touches until players understand the timing.
