What This Drill Improves

This soccer drill is best for advanced players who need focused work on defending. It works well with 22 players and can be adjusted by changing the space, pressure, or scoring rules.

Setup

Full pitch. Two full teams. Coach directs defensive team's shape.

Instructions

  1. Attacking team passes the ball around slowly on coach's instruction.
  2. Defensive team adjusts shape in response to ball position.
  3. Coach stops play to correct positions and distances.
  4. Progress to 50% speed, then live play.

Coaching Points

✓ Compactness — no big gaps between lines.
✓ Pressure the ball carrier.
✓ Back four stays flat when ball is wide.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Defenders diving in instead of delaying and controlling space.
  • Teammates pressing individually rather than moving as a unit.
  • Poor communication before the ball arrives.

Progressions: Make It Harder

→ Add live pressing triggers.
→ Defending team must win and counter in 8 seconds.
→ No coaching cues — team self-organises.

Regressions: Make It Easier

Reduce the number of defenders or make pressure passive for the first few rounds.
Increase the playing space so players have more time to make decisions.
