What This Drill Improves

This soccer drill is best for advanced players who need focused work on build up. It works well with 10 players and can be adjusted by changing the space, pressure, or scoring rules.

Setup

GK, back four, and midfielder build against four pressing players. Two mini goals mark target outlets.

Instructions

  1. Goalkeeper starts each repetition.
  2. Build-up team scores by passing into either mini goal.
  3. Pressing team scores by winning and finishing in the main goal.
  4. Restart from the goalkeeper after goals or ball out.

Coaching Points

✓ Create passing triangles around the ball.
✓ Use the goalkeeper as an extra player.
✓ When pressed wide, switch quickly if possible.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Players losing focus on the main coaching point.
  • The drill area being too large or too small for the group.
  • Progressing the drill before the basic pattern is clean.

Progressions: Make It Harder

→ Limit build-up team to three touches.
→ Add a second midfielder target.
→ Pressing team has 6 seconds to score after winning.

Regressions: Make It Easier

Reduce the number of defenders or make pressure passive for the first few rounds.
Increase the playing space so players have more time to make decisions.
