What This Drill Improves

This soccer drill is best for advanced players who need focused work on defending. It works well with 14 players and can be adjusted by changing the space, pressure, or scoring rules.

Setup

Set three horizontal zones. Defensive unit of six works against eight attackers circulating the ball.

Instructions

  1. Attackers move the ball side to side.
  2. Defensive unit slides together to protect central space.
  3. Coach freezes play to correct distances.
  4. Defenders score by forcing play wide or winning the ball.

Coaching Points

✓ Distance between defenders should stay small.
✓ Far-side players tuck in, not stand wide.
✓ Move on the pass, not after the receiver controls it.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Defenders diving in instead of delaying and controlling space.
  • Teammates pressing individually rather than moving as a unit.
  • Poor communication before the ball arrives.

Progressions: Make It Harder

→ Allow attackers to play forward into mini goals.
→ Remove coaching freezes.
→ Add a counter goal for defenders after winning possession.

Regressions: Make It Easier

Reduce the number of defenders or make pressure passive for the first few rounds.
Increase the playing space so players have more time to make decisions.
