What This Drill Improves

This soccer drill is best for advanced players who need focused work on transition. It works well with 16 players and can be adjusted by changing the space, pressure, or scoring rules.

Setup

Two full-size goals. 8v8 with rolling subs. Coach restarts with a throw-in on any dead ball.

Instructions

  1. On winning possession, team must pass forward within 3 seconds.
  2. If ball goes back or across within 3 sec, possession turns over.
  3. Goals only count if scored within 10 seconds of winning the ball.
  4. Play 15-minute halves.

Coaching Points

✓ Think attack before winning the ball.
✓ Support runners must go early.
✓ No safe passes sideways — commit.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Players losing focus on the main coaching point.
  • The drill area being too large or too small for the group.
  • Progressing the drill before the basic pattern is clean.

Progressions: Make It Harder

→ Winning team must score before losing team can recover.
→ One neutral player always joins the attacking team.
→ Bonus goal for scoring off a first-time finish.

Regressions: Make It Easier

Reduce the number of defenders or make pressure passive for the first few rounds.
Increase the playing space so players have more time to make decisions.
