What This Drill Improves

This soccer drill is best for advanced players who need focused work on pressing. It works well with 12 players and can be adjusted by changing the space, pressure, or scoring rules.

Setup

Half pitch. GK + 4 defenders vs 4 midfielders + attacking striker.

Instructions

  1. GK starts with the ball.
  2. Pressing team aims to win the ball in the final third.
  3. Building team aims to play through the press and score.
  4. Swap roles every 5 minutes.

Coaching Points

✓ Press as a unit — trigger from the front.
✓ Trap ball wide, then outnumber.
✓ Building team — goalkeeper is always an option.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Defenders diving in instead of delaying and controlling space.
  • Teammates pressing individually rather than moving as a unit.
  • Poor communication before the ball arrives.

Progressions: Make It Harder

→ Building team scores if they complete 10 passes.
→ Press team scores directly if they win in the final third.
→ Add neutral midfield link player.

Regressions: Make It Easier

Reduce the number of defenders or make pressure passive for the first few rounds.
Increase the playing space so players have more time to make decisions.
